This paper introduces a numerical variable speed limit (VSL) control method on motorway, modeled by the system of partial differential equations (PDEs) non- equilibrium continuum traffic model. The consists macroscopic simulation (i.e., solution PDEs model), introduction solution-based cost function and optimization with evolution algorithm (DE). Due to scheme, enables application wide range models without prior discretization PDEs. In this way, overcomes limitations basic represents step towards more accurate modelling in strategies. paper, we determine optimal limits DE motorway section modified switching curve model, which is non-equilibrium model consistent three-phase flow theory. effectiveness determined validated using microsimulations test section, show promising reductions queue lengths number stops.
